Icthus stories from Guatemala
Guatemala is the country where in 1964 Icthus began. Gilo Mendez, a Guatemalan lawyer, pastor and one of the founders of Icthus reflects on what this ministry has meant to him:
Being a part of the birth, formation and growth of Icthus was a rich experience. For me the beginning was when I became a guide to thirty wild and barefoot kids. It was a real life experimental lab of testing ideas and activities to help them. They enthusiastically answered the invitation to enroll in this adventure into the unknown.
I call it an adventure, because we knew nothing about what Icthus was going to be like in our little corner of Guatemala. Even the name was strange. But I became a guide anyway, and with my assistants started the first gang that we later called a legion. That is how we started this experience of formation, learning and growth, practice, and having Ephesians 6: 13-18 as our light.
