Dear Icthus Amigos,

I got home last night from Honduras at 9:30pm.  You might be surprised to learn that I’m feeling both SAD and HOPEFUL.

Let me quickly explain.

I’m feeling sad because of the hardships so many kids and youth face in Honduras.  Over the past 40 years I’ve visited Honduras many times.  Life seems harder now and the poverty and struggles are more apparent.  Poverty affects children in so many ways.  Add to that the fear of violence and the impact on children is even worse.  My heart is heavy today as I think back on the many kids I saw while traveling in Honduras, they face so many difficulties.

But, I’m also very hopeful.  Our Icthus team in Honduras is such a fine group of caring people.  You would like them and be hopeful too.  They are helping 89 groups - some 1,500 kids.  They need help to reach more kids.  With your help, I think they could provide ministry to 3,000 kids in a year!

My purpose in going to Honduras was to encourage and train the national team in new methods. Samuel from Colombia joined me.  Twenty of us met for three days at “Cerro de Luz,” (Hill of Light), which is a Christian conference center in the mountains two hours from San Pedro Sula.   At first there were many questions.  One was, “Will this work in Honduras?”  But as we continued to train, they got excited.  I was very encouraged by their enthusiasm.

Pamela, the new director, said that our visit was a big blessing and help to them.  Maximiliano, the president of the Honduras Icthus Board said he was very excited about what they’ll be able to accomplish.

On Monday, Samuel and I traveled to Puerto Cortez on the Atlantic Coast (there’s a well-preserved Spanish fort nearby complete with cannons from the Colonial times).  We spent the day with Pamela and Maximilian working on details for the Icthus annual plan.

In the evening, we visited the church where Maximilian is pastor.  Icthus kids got word that we were there and some of the kids and parents came.  For me this was the highlight of the trip.  Getting to see groups of Icthus kids rejuvenates me and makes me feel that all the work we do in Icthus is worth it.

So, I am very hopeful.  We have a great team in Honduras.  But, they need us to join them.  As you and I help, more kids will have Icthus.    How many children can we give Icthus to?   The Lord has given us a ministry that makes a big difference even in difficult situations.

The good news is that you have a wonderful opportunity to help many more children in a troubled part of the world.  The door is open to providing children with safe, fun places in local churches where they can go to learn, grow, and be guided to become God’s people of peace and love in their communities.  Long range this will build communities where they and their families can live and thrive.

Thank you for taking the time to read my report.  Thank you too for being an Icthus amigo to kids.  If you want to help more kids in Honduras, click the link below to give online.

Lord bless you,

Have you been to Honduras?  I’m traveling there on Thursday, January 31st.  Let me tell you why.

You’ve seen the sad news about refugees leaving Honduras, El Salvador and Guatemala.  They are fleeing their homes and pueblos because of difficulties.

Newspapers have written:

“They have been threatened or extorted by criminal gangs operating in their hometowns.”

My heart breaks for children and families in these difficult situations.  It makes me even more aware of the enormous needs in Central America and THE OPPORTUNITY for you and me to make a positive difference.

We need to extend Icthus to more children in Honduras.  We want more children to have safe, fun places where they can go to learn, grow, and be guided to become God’s people of peace and love in their communities.  Long range this will build communities where they and their families can live and thrive (not places they feel forced to flee).

Why I’m going to Honduras?

I’m going to Honduras to stand with our Icthus Team and new director.  I want to encourage them and to provide training to help them reach more children.

I want to help the Honduras Team make plans to start more groups and reach more children.  They’re currently helping 1,500 kids in 89 Icthus groups through 33 churches.

That’s great!  But, given the situation in Honduras we want to reach more children.  With God’s guidance and the support of Icthus Amigos like you, more kids will have Icthus.

By doing these two things you’ll be helping children and their families who live in a difficult situation.  My experience has been that working with kids to share God’s love and purpose strengthens them, their families, churches and ultimately their communities.  It helps prepare kids for success and keeps them away from gangs, drugs and so many other negative things.

Hello, my name is Jacsel.  I am 13 and I received Jesus in my heart when I was six.  I’m in 7th grade.  I live in Comayagua with my mom. She works in the fields to support me and my 3 sisters.  My dad abandoned us when I was little.  I thank God that I am a member of the Icthus group.  I thank my guide, Evelyn, because she has dedicated a lot of her time.

In Icthus I’ve learned a lot about what God likes.  For example, I used to be foul-mouthed.  Now I don´t say bad words anymore.  My mom and my guides say that my behavior is much better now.  I’m even doing better in school.

To me Icthus is more than a family.  I have learned about God and how much He loves me.

I also know He has plans for me.  During this year in Icthus I have learned that I want to be different from the other kids in my town and that I want to keep studying so when I grow up I will be able to help my mom and my sisters to succeed.

Your help prepares kids for success!  Your ongoing support is crucial to helping set more kids on a path to success, especially now in Honduras.

As I travel to Honduras it will be assuring to me knowing that you’ve “got my back” with prayer.  If it is possible for you, it would a big help if you would return the coupon or give a gift online.  I want to assure the Honduras Icthus Team that more help is on the way to help more kids.

Your help will make a big difference to kids in Honduras and is a positive answer to bringing God’s peace to their communities.  Your one-time gifts or monthly donations (Padrino program) are a blessing to kids.
