CRITICAL NEED TO TRAIN MORE ICTHUS GUIDES

April 2019

Guide training of current and new guides that took place in March in San Jose, Costa Rica.

A silent battle is raging.  It’s for the minds and hearts of young people.  Icthus Guides are on the “front-line” of that battle.  Without guides, kids wouldn’t have Icthus.   Training guides to lead kids is a vital part of the success of this Christian character-building ministry.

I’m writing to you because new and current guides need training.  All are eager to improve their skills and make a difference in the lives of kids.  But, they need help.  Because of the recent, rapid growth of Icthus there’s a critical shortage of funds to train guides.  Many of the guides are poor and need scholarships to get the training.    Scholarships averaging just $15 per guide are needed.  That’s a small cost considering the impact that training makes.

When you were young did you have a teacher or club leader who encouraged and helped you?  Were they someone you liked and respected?

Hebrews 13:7 encourages us to:

“Remember your leaders, who spoke the word of God to you.

Consider the outcome of their way of life and imitate their faith.”

Undoubtedly, your teachers and leaders needed and received training to be able to lead kids.  Who helped them get that training?  Who opened the doors that gave them the opportunity to serve?

Would you provide that opportunity to one or more Icthus guides?  Would you help motivate and train guides by providing scholarships?

It’s exciting that more kids than ever are receiving the Icthus ministry.  There are now ten-thousand kids being taught each week by 950 guides.  But, to train both current and new guides requires a huge effort in the different countries and funds are needed.

New guide graduates just trained in Chontales, Nicaragua. Guides like these need training throughout Latin America.

Never have we seen such a large need for training.  Scholarships are now more important than ever.

At least 200 of the guides will need a scholarship to be able to attend the training workshops.   Each in this group of 200+ guides need scholarship assistance because of their limited financial resources.

A $15 scholarship will help train one guide.  $30 will provide training to 2 guides, $45 will help 3 guides, $60 will provide for 4…  and as a result, they will impact the lives many hundreds of Icthus kids.   Your scholarship aid along with the funds that are raised locally in the countries, will multiply and make it possible for many guides to have excellent training.

By participating in the scholarship program, you’ll be helping these guides receive a well-designed program of training to give them the skills, knowledge and motivation to teach kids effectively.

Through the years I’ve received many testimonies from kids exclaiming how important their guides were in their lives.  Many of them want to become like their guides.   Just like you as an adult now, they still appreciate what their guides did for them years ago.

Here’s one example.  Sofia, a 12-year-old Icthus girl from Tegucigalpa, Honduras, said:

“My guides have helped me and my family as well.  Thanks to my guides, I gave my life to God and this has been the best that has happened in my life.”

George Barna, a Christian researcher, said something that I think is very important to remember about teachers and youth leaders: “They are the frontline in the battle for the hearts and minds of young people.

So much in our world is trying to lead kids astray and discourage them from being what God made them to be.  That’s why more guides are needed on the frontline.  I hope you’ll join me in preparing these guides to make a huge difference in the lives of the kids.

A NEW GUIDE SHARES

Fanny, 17 years old, is a new guide to kids in Colombia.   Training is helping her to be effective.

She says:

“I started in Icthus when I was 13.  It was an incredible experience.  Now I am training and preparing so that I can guide kids and help them have this great learning and blessing.”

WHAT IS A GUIDE?

Guides are volunteers who give of their time, effort, and resources to help and teach the children and teens.  They are of many ages.  Some are the parents of kids in Icthus groups.  A few are grandparents.  However, more than half of the guides are youth and young adults ages 16 to 25.  Many of this dynamic age were Icthus kids themselves and they want to pass Icthus on to more kids.  The guides of this age group are the most in need of scholarships.
